ready made magnifiers

Ready-made magnifiers are not reading glasses

To see clearly, your brain has developed a complex system of binocular vision using two eyes at the same time to give a single, fused image.

When reading glasses are made, the optical centres are placed exactly at the width of your eyes to allow binocular vision. If the optical centres are slightly moved, your eyes will start to turn towards them (long term physiotherapy). This is called putting prism in your glasses and is used to correct an imbalance in how some people’s eyes turn.

If the optical centres are incorrectly placed in your glasses, either your eyes will start to turn, or you will subconsciously suppress one eye (not use one eye) – neither of these are good long term.

When you use ready-made magnifiers, you have no idea where the optical centres are.

Subconscious suppression also occurs when two eyes are presented with images and one is clearer than the other. It is rare for anyone to have the same magnification power requirements in each eye, and hence reading glasses usually have a different right and left power.

Ready-made magnifiers present equal magnification.

When you read the label on the display holder or ready-mades, it will state: “warning – not to be used to correct sight defects” – meaning reading glasses.

Think what your vision really means to you and ask yourself: “Is the price of ready-made magnifiers too high?”
